Pointe d'Esny Le Village: committed to preserving and restoring wetland ecosystems

Pointe d'Esny Le Village is unique for its holistic approach, fostering a development that is mindful of its environmental impact.

A groundbreaking wetland restoration project was initiated by Pointe d'Esny Le Village in March 2022. The initiative aims to restore 125,000 m² of wetland, enhancing biodiversity and safeguarding native ecosystems.

The goal of this programme is to conserve natural heritage and simultaneously expand the area, creating a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Ecosystem safeguarding

This initiative relies on a rigorous and methodical management of ecosystems. A major objective is to replace invasive non-native species with endemic and indegenous species, essential for maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

To achieve this, a dedicated team of 15 people was assembled to carry out the wetland rehabilitation, receiving training in plant identification, wetland ecology, site management, and the planting of selected species as outlined in the restoration plan.

So far, 600 native trees, shrubs, and palms have been planted as part of a larger project to plant 7000 trees, creating a sanctuary for local wildlife.

Another significant step towards balancing development and wetland conservation was taken in 2023 with the introduction of the Triton system, a groundbreaking green initiative in the Indian Ocean. Funded by MCB under the SUNREF project and backed by AFD and the EU, this system effectively manages rainwater infiltration, mimicking natural water flow, and releasing purified water into the wetlands through slow percolation to safeguard underground ecosystems.

A committed educational initiative

In addition to ecological restoration, Pointe d’Esny Le Village is involved in environmental education and outreach. An educational visit for students took place in April 2024, led by botanist Jean Claude Sevathian. Further initiatives are planned to foster public awareness of wetland conservation, encourage future conservation efforts, and support ongoing restoration activities in the natural park.

Pointe d’Esny Le Village embodies a vision of the future where nature and human habitation coexist harmoniously in a respected and valued environment.
