For many families across Mauritius, building a home still feels just out of reach. The cost of construction has climbed steadily, making the journey more demanding than it once was. Recent figures from the Construction Price Index, issued by Statistics Mauritius, reflect this continuing trend.
Between January and June 2025, the index climbed from 141.6 to 145.5. Over a one-year period, this equates to a 5.9% increase. Labour makes up 24.1% of the index, with its cost rising by approximately 13.8% over twelve months. This change is already evident on construction sites.
The largest portion of the index is still attributed to materials, which account for around 68.6% of the total. Several major components have recorded price increases in recent months, including cement, aluminium openings and premixed mortar.
Not all materials, however, are moving in the same direction. Steel bars have recorded a decrease of around 3.7% over twelve months, offering some limited relief on certain structural elements.
Since 2018, the index has increased by more than 45%, changing the way projects are approached. Today, anticipating costs and planning purchases carefully has become essential to keep a construction project in Mauritius on track.
