Construction and sustainable development: from commitment to action... This is the initiative launched by Kolos Cement Ltd with a forum organised last June. The forum gathered several actors of the sector and specialists in sustainable development to discuss the transition toward a circular economy for the construction sector.
Addressing the issue of sustainable development on construction sites in Mauritius, Ravi Gutty, President of BACECA, summed up the situation: too much construction and demolition waste go to Mare Chicose or into the wild. Training in waste management and the adoption of less conventional construction methods are also lacking.
He then outlined a series of proposals to counter these problems: the integration of collection bins for waste sorting on building sites or the regulation of construction waste disposal. While the forum allowed industry players and authorities to address the obstacles and challenges, they are more determined than ever to engage in more responsible construction methods.
The forum is also an important step in Kolos Cement Ltd campaign Retourn to plastik, launched in May as part of the introduction of a Palett-less System at its Mer Rouge site. This initiative, the only one of its kind in the Indian Ocean, is designed to reduce the use of pallets in the loading process. Cement bags are packed in recyclable plastic covers, which are then recycled and transformed into iso range piping for construction work.
The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Kavydass Ramano, said that every company has a social responsibility to protect the environment by ensuring the ethical use of every resource it consumes in its production. He praised Kolos Cement Ltd for its green initiative and its commitment to ecological transition and sustainable development.
