Last February, the Moka Smart City received the Tree City of the World certification. This distinction highlights Moka's efforts toward sustainable urban development at the heart of the island. Discover the smart city’s initiatives to promote sustainable management and the conservation of urban trees, amongst others.
“We achieved this certification thanks to the work of our teams. First, with the creation of an official body within our team and the establishment of rules for the management of trees in Moka. Then, the allocation of a budget to support the annual program, and the organization of a day to celebrate Arbor Day with an official proclamation. This work has allowed us to create a long-lasting structure,” explains Anielle Carver, Moka Smart City’s Sustainability Lead.
What is the Tree City of the World Certification?
Launched in the United States by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, this certification aims to recognize cities that are committed to managing and maintaining trees in urban areas.
For a city to earn this certification, it must meet certain essential criteria:
✔️ Maintain an urban tree management plan, ✔️ Ensure sufficient tree coverage (the total area including forests and trees throughout the city), and ✔️ Promote community engagement in tree conservation.
By achieving this certification, Moka joins major cities such as Melbourne, Paris, New York, Toronto, and London, becoming the second Tree City in Africa. From now on, it will also celebrate Arbor Day like its distinguished counterparts.
